I love the holiday season. I really do. I’m no scrooge. But I’m also not about joining in with all the superfluous hoopla of obligatory gift giving, over-eating, and attending way too many holiday parties.
Since coming back from Peru, I’ve been asking myself what truly brings me joy and purpose and being clear about what that looks like and how that plays out in my personal and professional life. I can get easily overwhelmed with the constant to-do lists and high volume of people to connect with in business and in my personal life. And I am easily stretched too thin with trying to make everything happen, ending up simply going thru the motions.
AND THEN IT HIT ME: why would I do something I’m not really fully connecting with and feeling into with my entire being and senses? Why am I doing things that I can just cross of my list, including plans with friends? Is how I’m spending my time really something I want to invest myself in? Is this relationship really someone I am truly enjoying connecting with at this present stage of life.
Going thru the motions with my activities and relationships just wasn’t cutting it for me anymore. There have been some uncomfortable shifts in my habits, choices, old stagnate relationships; but this re-evaluation of what and who I am spending my time with has been transformational and a breath of fresh air. Instead of planning too many things, I sit with it and ask myself a few things:
-Is this activity adding true value to my life?
-Is this relationship healthy, life-giving and fits in the natural flow of my current life?
-Am I trying to force something to happen that maybe just isn’t a fit for me with who I am moving forward?
-Is what I’m doing worth investing my time in?
-Is this flowing or is this being forced?
And with the holiday season already with us, perhaps this is a practice you might want to consider coming into. I am unmarried with no children and can orchestrate what I want to do a little more easily than some. But even if you’re with a partner and have children, there is still a space for you to re-evaluate the activities and relationships in your life. I’m NOT suggesting only doing things that are easy and give you instant gratification, but to really examine if how you’re spending your time and energy is fueling your present most passionate invested self.
Let this season be a re-evaluation of what truly is important to you. Holidays obligations….Go big! Have fun! Get weird! Do cool shit! But be (feel) engaged and present and fully involved with what you’re doing and who with. And join my revolution to elF holiday obligations (any obligation) that isn’t bringing you more joy and more life!
